A note on quiet

A few thoughts on making room for silence in a noisy world.

Mountains reflected in the still water of Bowman Lake

This is a demonstration essay. The scene below is imagined, and the photograph is stock imagery.

In this small scene, the lake is almost still. Nothing happens quickly. A cloud crosses the mountain, and its reflection follows a moment later.

Quiet is not the absence of a story. Sometimes it is the space that lets a story become visible.

Leave a pause

A film can hold a shot for another breath. A paragraph can end before explaining everything. A photograph can leave something outside its frame.

These are small choices. Their effect is to give attention somewhere to rest.

  • Listen before recording.
  • Allow the scene to find its own pace.
  • Keep only what helps the viewer see.
